Father’s
Day is celebrated worldwide to recognize the contribution that fathers
and father figures make to the lives of their children. This day
celebrates fatherhood and male parenting. Although it is celebrated on
a variety of dates worldwide, many countries observe this day on the
third Sunday in June. Father's Day is the day to recognize, honor and
celebrate the sacrifices and accomplishments of our fathers. Children
celebrate their fathers and father figures to show their love and
appreciation. More recently, Father's Day has been used to educate the
population as to the significant impact a father makes in the home of
young children. Father's Day was created to complement Mother's Day.

Britain has a new princess - and eagerly awaits her name
LONDON (AP) — From Prince Charles to the bettors at the corner store, everyone in Britain was hoping for a girl. The
Duchess of Cambridge delighted her nation and royal enthusiasts around
the world Saturday by delivering one such princess. The royal birth was
greeted with cheers and elated cries of "Hip, hip, hooray!" outside St.
Mary's Hospital in London, where fans and the world's media have waited
for days. The baby — Prince William and Kate's second child — was
born Saturday morning and weighed 8 pounds 3 ounces (3.7 kilograms),
officials said. She is fourth in line to the throne and the fifth
great-grandchild of 89-year-old Queen Elizabeth II. Britain hasn't
welcomed a princess born this high up the line of succession for
decades. It may be a day or two before the world knows what to
call her. When Prince George, her older brother, was born in 2013,
royal officials waited two days before announcing his name. Speculation
about the new royal's name has been frenetic, and all the top bets for
the baby's name have been for girls: Alice and Charlotte are the clear
favorites, followed by Elizabeth, Victoria and Diana — all names with
strong royal connections. Royal children are usually given several
names — the baby's brother was christened George Alexander Louis — so
the princess's name could incorporate more than one of those guesses. Anticipation
had been building for weeks after Kate, 33, told a well-wisher she was
due around late April. Still, journalists were caught slightly off
guard when she delivered barely three hours after checking into the
hospital at dawn Saturday. William, 32, was present at the birth. The
couple later emerged on the hospital steps with the infant to briefly
pose for photographers before leaving for their home at nearby
Kensington Palace. Kate, who wore a yellow-and-white floral shift dress
by British designer Jenny Packham, held the sleeping baby wrapped in a
white shawl. The couple looked relaxed but didn't answer any
questions. William earlier told reporters he was "very happy" as he
brought young George to the hospital to meet his baby sister. George,
looking slightly alarmed by all the cameras, waved dutifully at the
adoring crowds.

6 Rules for ‘Happy Birthday’ Etiquette in the Age of Facebook
We’ve
reached a point in history where social media has been around long
enough to require some etiquette rules. Don’t post about fights you’re
having with your spouse. No inspirational quotes. Limit pictures of
your children to only the super cute ones.
But birthdays have
become complicated to the point where people don’t know the rules
anymore. Facebook has changed the whole birthday game, as it were. No
longer do people get credit for remembering the day you graced
humanity; now they get an alert (and a follow-up reminder!) about it.
The ease of remembering has led to confusion about how to offer the
appropriate “happy birthday” greeting.
To many, the day of
one's birth remains something to celebrate. Birthday wishes are
received, cake is eaten, perhaps gifts are given. Sure, there are some
who shrug off the whole thing as a celebration for children. But those
people have dark, black souls and should be shunned.
For everyone else, Here are the general guidelines for modern-day happy-birthday-wishing:
Midnight, in person:
A requirement for your spouse, boyfriend, or girlfriend. Watch the
clock, and then give your special someone a big kiss. Don't tell me you
don't stay up until midnight—you're not 100 and, if you are, then all
the more reason to greet 101 as soon as it arrives.
Midnight, via call or text:
If you're close with your sibling, you call at midnight. You have the
same eyes, you put up with your crazy parents together, you know things
about each other that can't be put into words. Honor them with a call
at midnight. Text if you must, but then follow-up with a call the next
day. You get bonus points if you get your greeting in before their
spouse does.
By telephone: Old
friends with whom you are still close and any member of your family
should get a phone call. If you’ve known someone since you were
children or teenagers, and you stayed in touch in the days before
social media and cell phones, you call on their birthday, even if you
think a Facebook wall post would suffice. You wish them well, you
remind them of how awesome they are and you make plans (which you then
keep!) to celebrate their birthday in the near future. It should go
without saying—but it doesn’t—that you call your mother, your aunt, and
anyone you are related to on their birthdays. Don’t leave messages
(ever, really, but especially not on someone’s special day). You’re not
as busy as you think, try them again.
Calling preferred, texting permitted:
Friends you’ve made in the past five years. New friends are where the
birthday greeting gets somewhat tricky. As you get older, you will meet
fewer new people and connect with only a small number of them. If you
are close enough to text a few times a week, then a text is the minimum
of what you should do. If you talk on the phone, like people did in the
days of yore, then you need to call. Even if you don’t text but go out
once or twice a month, recognize how difficult it is to meet someone
and hit it off after a certain age, and, at minimum, text them to say
happy birthday.
Post on a Facebook wall/send a tweet:
Old friends with whom you keep in touch on Facebook only. Acquaintances
who you like, but with whom you have limited interaction.
Twitter-friends. I'm not against the Facebook wall post, or tweet, but
it's not for every person in your life. If your friendship “lives” on
social media, it's fine to keep it there. But understand that it’s not
for everyone.
On your own Facebook wall/Instagram feed:
Don’t do this. Really. We all know you love your BFF 4EVA but unless
you’re under 20, and even then, putting up a collage of pictures and
wishing your friend a happy birthday on your own page is just cheesy.
The exceptions to this might be a milestone birthday or during a year
when your friend has really helped you through a hard time. Otherwise,
just don’t. Spouse and sibling birthday wishes in this manner are
sometimes OK, but, again, limit them to special birthdays, not yearly.
Celebrating
birthdays, whether your own or that of family and friends, is a happy
occasion. Let’s not mar that with over use of the Facebook wall or
texting when we should call. Social media should be complementary to
other kinds of interaction, not in place of it. And birthdays are a
good time to pause and reflect—off-line—on the important relationships
in your life.
Some reports suggest nearly half the world’s population suffers from vitamin D deficiency, which is unsettling news given that a lack of vitamin D has been associated with a host of serious conditions: cancer, heart disease, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, tuberculosis and even depression, not to mention brittle bones and the common cold. “It’s a long list because the vitamin D steroid hormone affects different genes in different tissues,” says John Cannell, founder of the Vitamin D Council and author of "Autism Causes, Prevention and Treatment: Vitamin D Deficiency and the Explosive Rise of Autism Spectrum Disorder." “Vitamin D is a steroid hormone precursor that is made in the skin,” Cannell explains. “The vitamin D steroid hormone activates up to 1,000 of the 21,000 active genes in the human genome. If the gene is in the brain, vitamin D affects the brain. If the gene is in the heart, vitamin D affects the heart. Thirty-seven different tissues in the human body utilize vitamin D and need it for adequate functioning.” Given the importance of vitamin D to the body, a growing number of studies highlight what an insufficient amount can mean to one’s health. In a study published Wednesday in BMJ, researchers tracked the blood samples of more than 95,000 participants for nearly 40 years and found that genes associated with permanent low levels of vitamin D raised the risk of early death. Throughout the study period, people with these genes had an increased mortality rate of 30 percent and a 40 percent higher risk of death from cancer. While previous studies have shown a link between a vitamin D deficiency and increased mortality, the possibility that low levels of vitamin D were the result of poor health could have distorted those findings. For the first time, a causal relationship between a vitamin D deficiency and increased mortality was established. In October, researchers revealed that in a study of patients who suffered from sudden cardiac arrest, 65 percent of those with low vitamin D levels suffered poor neurological outcomes six months after hospital discharge, compared with 23 percent of patients with healthy vitamin D levels. In addition, 29 percent of patients with low levels died six months after their cardiac attack, whereas all the patients with healthy vitamin D levels survived. How does vitamin D, or a lack thereof, affect neurological function? “Vitamin D functions as a modulator in brain development and as a neuroprotectant through the association of neurotrophic factors," says study author Jin Wi, a professor at Yonsei University College of Medicine in Seoul, Korea. "Vitamin D deficiency causes neuronal apoptosis and hinders the growth and survival of neurons, leading to the impairment of neurological function. In patients resuscitated after sudden cardiac arrest, neurological dysfunction is caused mainly by excessive oxidative stress, free radicals and immune reaction. Vitamin D provides antioxidative mechanisms and regulates the immune system by reducing inflammatory cytokines.” Given their findings, Wi adds that “a vitamin D deficiency should be avoided, especially in people with a high risk of sudden cardiac arrest. People are at a higher risk if they have a personal or family history of heart disease, including heart rhythm disorders, congenital heart defects and cardiac arrest.” In an online issue of Neurology published in August, a study examined the vitamin D levels of 1,658 people over age 65 who were dementia-free. Nearly 200 of the subjects developed dementia, and slightly more than 100 had Alzheimer’s disease after an average of six years. The researchers discovered that when compared with subjects with normal levels of vitamin D, those with low levels had a 53 percent increased risk of developing dementia, while those with a severe deficiency had a 125 percent increased risk. Plus, people with lower levels of vitamin D were almost 70 percent more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease, while those with a severe deficiency were more than 120 percent more likely to do so.
Avocados
"Every dietitian I know agrees that avocados are a must-eat food. They
are a great source of healthy fats, which help fill you up so you'll be
less likely to want a snack later on. Plus, they taste really decadent.
I love putting avocado slices on my salad; research shows that it helps
your body absorb nutrients. And they are the perfect food if you're on
the go. When I fly, I stash an avocado in my carry-on. I cut it in
half, sprinkle on a little salt and pepper, grab a few crackers, and
I've got a perfect plane snack." —Carolyn Brown, a registered dietitian
at Foodtrainers in New York City
Jatindranath Mukherjee was one of the most valiant revolutionary philosophers and freedom fighters the British rule in India. His heroic struggle against the colonial rulers earned him the moniker Bagha Jatin (Tiger Jatin). Gandhi respectrd him as 'a divine personality' and a British officer called Sir Charles Tegart said, "If Jatin were an Englishman, the English people would have build his statue next to Nelson's at Trafalgar Sqaure." We remember the heroic sacrifice of this brave son of Bangladesh. Jatin was Born in a village in Kushtia district of Bangladesh (then East Bengal) in 1879. After passing the Entrance examination in 1895, Jatin joined the Calcutta Central Collage to study Fine Arts. Jatin used to visit Swami Vivekananda whose vision of politically independent India influenced him a lot. Fed up with the colonial education, Jatin left for Muzaffarpore in 1899, as secretary of barrister Pringle Kennedy. Jatin was one of the founders of the revolutionary group Anushilan Samiti. Jatin together with Barindra Ghosh, set up a bomb factory near Deoghar. After the partition of Bengal in 1905 Jatin issued several daring raids against British officials. Notable among them were India Bank robbery, an attempt to assassinate the Lt Governor of Bengal, assassinations of the prosecutor Ashutosh Biswas and the Deputy Superintendent of police, Samsul Alam and Haorah Shibpurgang case. Jatin established another revolutionary group called Jugantor to collaborate with the German army during the World War 1 to liberate India. They planned to organise an armed revolt all over India. This international network conceived by Jatin came to be known as the Hindu-German Conspiracy or Zimmerman Plan. The plot leaked out through Czech revolutionaries who revealed the plan to the US intelligence officers in 1915. As soon as the information reached the British authorities, the police started a combing operation to arrest Jatin. Being surrounded by police during a 75 minute long gunfight, Jatin was captured seriously wounded. Bagha Jatin died in Balasore hospital on September 10, 1915. Inspired by Swami Vivekananda, Jatin expressed his ideals in simple words. "We shall die to awaken the nation."
When it comes to clothing and textiles, this part of the subcontinent has been famous in so many ways.We had the extraordinary skills of weaving muslin's, the best indigo for dying clothes and so much more. Although most of those have disintegrated, the art and creativity weaving remained. What started as small cottage industry has now becomes one of the largest sari industries of this region. Yes we are speaking of the ultimate sari hub, Benarasi Palli . If you travel along the silk threads of what makes a Banarasi sari, you will find yourself travelling along our very own history; such is the intricate connection of this garment with this land. The art of making Banarasi has evolved separately in Veranasi in India where its origins lay and in Mirpur, Dhaka where some of the artisans migrated after the 1947 partition and were stranded after the 1971 War of Independence. The local Banarasi sari can be found in many types such as Banaras, Butidar, Monihar, Organza, Sharnalata, Banarasi jute cotton, etc. Each is an off-shoot of the basic Banarasi concept of weaving, differing in the material used. Until recent years Mirpur Banarasi has been in somewhat of a rut. Spreading from Mirpur 10 to 11 and housing almost 110 shops, the Banarasi Palli is a haven for sari lovers -- buyers, sellers and makers alike. Manick Banarasi is one of the bigger outlets in the area that has been serving its customers for the last 22 years, a Banarasi is not just a piece of clothing, it is rather a flamboyant portion of art and heritage that deserves the utmost respect. The saris are made from pure silk, which is more expensive than artificial ones imported from China
